What is the matrix? Actually this is not the important question, rather – what is not the matrix? The Matrix is a film to show us an idea of our reality. However, as it’s a movie like any other, it had to make money – they made the philosophical point, but in a film that would be likely seen by as many people as possible, thus generating profits.
Good guys, bad guys. Humans and machines. Masters and pupils. Prisoners and guards. The chosen one. Love. Betrayal. Fights, runners, learning processes. Winners and looser. People willing to get free, people fighting to stay in prison. Good guys almost lose. Love and Hope save the day.
Which movie did I just talk about? Probably most films ever made have some or all the topics I pointed out. So, what is different about The Matrix?
Oh yes! Special effects, sound effects, costume designers, screen play. Actors and actresses. Slow motion action sequences. Everything a good film should have.
Still those are qualities that a great number of movies certainly have. And, maybe, Matrix does not distinguish itself decisively in most of those categories. Nevertheless I am not afraid to say that Matrix is the best film I’ve seen in the last few years.
I believe it would be a great movie only cause of the qualities I’ve mentioned above. What makes it unique, though, is the next thing I’m going to say: The Matrix is a metaphor of the world we live in. I am not saying the “reality” is exactly the way it is shown in the movie; instead I believe we live inside a “matrix” that we call universe. What are miracles? Rules that we take as static and universal being bent or broken. What is our spirit? Simply our “real body” outside the matix.
Things we got used to hear are explained by this metaphor. When someone heal himself by willpower, he only realized that his “real body” (outside the matrix) is perfectly healthy and so should be his body here. When a person loses an arm, for example, and feels like it is still there, it is the arm outside the matrix he is noticing.
It is easy to go on like this, writing more and more examples. However I am sure you will come up with some of your own, and maybe consider the idea that it might all make sense.
What is not the matrix? What is not the matrix is what I will call the Outer Universe where our spirits exist. I think that we can live a much better life if we try to taste a little bit of that Outer
Universe.
